Things are working good! 2/17/99 11:30 PM
The system seems to be working really good, We got a few more connecting at high speeds today and my phone and e-mail have slowed down quite a bit. We also closed our work order with US West today, which means that the install is complete.
I made another help page on how to identify your modem, If you have a 56K modem and cannot connect any faster send me the info from these instructions.
I get quite a few people saying that with their 33.6 modems they get a slower connection speed number but that it seems faster. This is possible, The new equipment will give a more accurate indicator of your speed, The number you get on the analog lines may not be true. The upgrade to our router should have speeded up the whole system including the old analog lines.
I think we have stable connections finally! 2/16/99 10:00 PM
Since we reconfigured about noon I have spent almost 8 hours connected to the new lines. In that time I have only been disconnected once. My connection speed was always above 44K. Let me know if you are still having disconnect problems. I have also gotten several reports from others that it is stable now.
I see quite a few people on tonight I counted 46 at one point,(must be making up for all those busy signals you suffered through!!) when I seen it I did a little testing and it looked like we were performing pretty good.
I am updating the modem troubleshooting page tonight and adding a page on making some modem adjustments.
I still see quite a few people that I think should be connecting at high speed that are connecting at 33.6 speeds, let me know if you are having trouble getting your modem upgraded.
I now have a line in the shop that works for connecting at higher speed, If you think your system is configured correctly but is still connecting at analog speeds bring it in and we can try it on a phone line that is known to work.
I want to thank all of our customers for your patience and confidence in us, I know we have had a lot of busy signals in the last 2 months and the service has not been what I want it to be. We have only had a couple of people get disgusted and move to another service, so I thank you for hanging with us during this slow coming upgrade.
We think we found the problem! 2/16/99 1:00 PM
We found out that there was an incompatibility between the way our equipment was configured and the way U.S. West has configured the lines.
Our system has been re configured to match the line configuration. We expect that this problem would cause some erratic behavior.
We will watch the performance of the lines for the next day or so and see if this improves stability and performance.
Still Working on the disconnect problem. 2/15/99 10:00 PM
I had another technician check our config today, he changed some settings but as of tonight I dont think it has helped.
The disconnect problem seems to be the worst during the peak phone lines usage times (6:00 to 10:00 PM) so this makes us think that it is related to line condition.
We will think of somthing else to try tomorrow though, in the meantime I have noticed improved stability by limiting the connection speeed on modems.
56k is here 2/14/99 9:30 PM
Quite a few people are connecting at over 40K and a few have stable connections over 46K. One factor that seems to make a lot of difference is line condition, I am still learning about that.
I will also have another technician look at our configuration tomorrow, Just to see if I am overlooking something.
We are still seeing random disconnects on the new lines, a lot of this is that lines cant handle the speed, we are having to slow down the modems to get a stable connection. Look here for more info
The new lines are working. 2/13/99 11:00 AM
I am seeing quite a few people able to connect at speeds above 40K which is what we expected.
Some modems that should connect at higher speeds are still connecting slower. This may be due to line conditions or the modem drivers may need to be upgraded. If you have this problem let me know what your modem is.
Also I'm interested in knowing what modems are connecting faster than 44000, If you are connecting at that speed I'd like to know what modem you have also.
Our latest Upgrade is almost complete. 2/12/99 9:00 PM
We have installed a new router. It came on-line about 2:00 AM on 2/12/99. It should improve system performance during the busy hours. During the testing of the router I noticed an improved performance over our old router.
We have also installed a channelized UAS T1. This is a digital line that allows 24 connections between the local telephone office and our server location. This should improve connection performance. To fully utilize our T1 connection we have also install a Cisco AS5200 Access Concentrator. This should also improve connection performance and allow use of the new V.90 modem standard.
To take advantage of this new equipment you should upgrade your modem to 56K/flex or V.90. Most modem manufactures have this information available on their websites.
At this time, 8:00 PM, 2/12/99 we are still having some difficulty getting V.90 connections, I will be working on this throughout the weekend and will keep you informed on the latest here.
Instructions on how to connect to the new lines and equipment can be found here
